| In partnership with God, our mission as the DON BOSCO COMMUNITY CENTER is to enable all people, especially the young and those who need us most, to realize their fullest potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
| | Our Vision | | We help young people discover their calling in life. We are advocates for those in need - especially new immigrants and the poor - in offering support services to empower them to reach their full potential and lead meaningful lives in their families and communities.
| | Our Method - The Salesian Spirit | | We follow the educational approach of St. John Bosco, founder of the Salesian Society. We make our Center a Home that welcomes, a Playground where friends come to meet, a School that prepares for life, and a Church for those who have none.
The educational philosophy of St. John Bosco is reason, religion, and kindness. It is a philosophy not only for children, but also teenagers, young adults, and adults. The basic principle of his system was a deep understanding and love for young people and the poor-those in need. Educators are called upon to: - Accept young people as unique individuals living in an adult world of real fears and pressures.
- Be fair, thoughtful, and respectful of young people's values.
- Make demands upon them which are reasonable and just.
- Win their compliance not by force, but by firm, friendly persuasion.
- Believe that even the most troublesome youth can be touched by kindness.
- Challenge young people to live genuine, good, Christian lives.
| | Saint John Bosco (Don Bosco) | | "Don" is the Italian equivalent of "Father"
John Bosco was born on August 16, 1815, in a small town not too far from Turin, Italy. His father died when he was two years old. He was raised with tender love, yet firm discipline, by his mother, Margaret.
John Bosco was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood in 1841, and went to work in Turin where the industrial revolution was attracting waves of young people to the city. The misery and abandonment of these young people moved John Bosco deeply. He dedicated his life to the children, and began youth clubs, hostels, and boarding schools where he taught young people trades.
In 1859, John Bosco founded the Salesian Society, and in 1872, the Salesian Sisters was founded to work with girls. Three years later, Don Bosco sent the first missionary group to Argentina. His work has now spread throughout the world to over 125 countries. John Bosco died on January 31, 1888. |
